A Quick Java ME Primer

December 6th, 2007 · No Comments

Have you ever wanted to write your own video games or other applications for mobile phones and PDAs? Then perhaps you should take a look at Java ME, a popular platform for developing applications for mobile devices. This article will get you started with a quick introduction to Java ME. We’ll talk about what Java ME is, and the different configurations of Java ME that are available on mobile phones and PDAs.

Simply put, Java ME (formerly J2ME) consists of a Java virtual machine and a set of core APIs specifically designed for consumer electronic devices. If you are interested in writing video games, your target devices will probably be mobile phones, and PDAs, such as Blackberry and Palm. (Sadly, Java ME support on Pocket PC devices is almost non-existent.) This being said, you don’t have to limit your code to only work on one particular type of device. Java ME allows you to choose an environment which meets the requirements of your application, and only devices supporting that environment will be able to run it. Since this is Java, you need not be concerned with the manufacturer, wireless carrier, or hardware of the target device. This is, of course, unless you decide to use any vendor-specific extensions (more on that later).

The Java ME environment has two important components, the configuration and the profile. The configuration defines the base functionality of the Java ME environment, such as the specifications of the virtual machine, and which set of core APIs is available. For devices such as the ones mentioned above, you will be using Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC).

8 Steps to Evaluating a Used Laptop Computer

June 12th, 2007 · No Comments

If you have considered purchasing a used laptop computer you might first want to review the following step by step evaluation process to ensure that you get a good quality used laptop computer.

Step 1-Find out what external hardware is included with the computer. At a bare minimum, the laptop computer will need a power cord. Other options that might be included are an external mouse, keyboard and floppy disk drive. Additional hardware offerings could include a microphone, speakers, printer, scanner, external wireless card and battery.

Step 2-Find out what internal hardware is included with the computer. The most popular internal hardware component is the internal wireless network card. Other internal hardware components include things such as a video card, DVD drive, CD Rom drive, and a sound card.

Step 3-Before you even consider purchasing a used laptop computer, ask if the computer components are original, repaired or replaced.

Is Your Laptop Running Slow?

May 19th, 2007 · No Comments

Is your laptop running slow? Remember sometime around this time last year, or maybe the year before that (if it was before then we’ll just pretend) when your new computer worked perfectly? It only took seconds for your computer to boot up. Now you can take a shower, have breakfast and wash the dishes in the time it takes the start menu to show up. Why is your laptop running slow?

Your computer is similar to your car in that you need to maintain it. Ever notice the difference between an older well maintained car and a car that was never maintained. The same differences exist between a well maintained computer and one that is just worked to death.

To make your computer run faster you can just reformat the whole computer, although if you have a lot of information and programs on your computer then this may not seem like such an appealing task. Of course, you could just decide to bite the bullet, clean up your files, eliminate what you don’t need, burn all your files onto a CD. Save any programs you want and reformat. Yuck! What a job! This one is up to you.

You could go into the windows registry and fix the registry problems that are probably slowing down your computer. The thing of it is; do you know where the windows registry is and what to fix when you get there?

Choosing a PDA

March 4th, 2007 · No Comments

In a busy world where work, home, and recreation aren’t always separate, having an assistant to track appointments and important dates, make the internet available, and allow users to access and complete their work wherever they may be is invaluable. To meet this need, a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) is most often the best and most affordable answer.

For those who are first time PDA buyers, the options can be overwhelming. Although there are certainly a large number of features available, having a brief list of some of the primary characteristics to consider can make the decision making process much easier.

- Size

Which size works best varies by individual. The smaller the better for some while others prefer larger as they feel it is easier to handle and operate. To assure satisfaction with a PDA purchase it is wise to put hands on and use the device before buying. For those who take advantages of the savings that can be found in shopping online, a pre-purchase excursion to a brick and mortar store can give them the face-to-face time they need with a variety of devices.

Handheld Devices in the Classroom

February 27th, 2007 · No Comments

When I was in education all the rage was technology in the classroom. The rage wasn’t technology in general but rather hand held devices or palm pilots of some variety. Although I have been removed from a classroom for a couple of years now nothing has changed. PDA’s do not aid in learning.

I’ll start with the devices themselves. In my experience there was a company that offered up devices as part of a grant. The device was nothing more than a palm pilot with a full keyboard built in. Actually worse than that because the screen was smaller. It reminded me of an old electric typewriter. These devices were supposed to revolutionize teaching. How? Good question. No one knew. I was looked down upon in these camps or meetings when I would put down the devices. I was seen as a downer or pessimist when in reality as a problem solver I was looking for answers. A palm pilot will not increase test scores unless the answer key is on it. In the sessions we had to learn how to integrate these devices into the classroom we basically learned how to install drivers and beam things. We learned how to teach how to use the device not how to use the device to teach.

In reality as a business man I saw through the grant. The company that offered up the devices was using the grant group as beta testers. As a technologist they were eager to hear my likes and dislikes on the device so they could go back to the lab and make changes based on me. “Mr. Christensen would you like it better if it was wireless?” Part of the grant was a requirement for such opinions and updates. Hand helds in the classroom is a marketing scheme for technology software and hardware companies to make a buck on an unsuspecting consumer. Generally schools do not know anything about technology so they are easy pickings. Some one comes along and offers an article saying hand helds will raise your scores and boom you’ve just sold a bunch of hand helds.

Wi-Fi allows the user to access the Internet anywhere in or around the given location, but requires a separate Internet service.

These days Wifi hotspots are installed in various public places, where people can connect to the network such as, Libraries, Hotels, college campuses, office buildings, coffee shops, and many other public areas. That made business users who can gain extra work time, by squeezing in Internet time at various Wifi hotspots in need for the service.

Having a good Wi-Fi experience directly translates into a satisfying Internet experience. Hence we see that wifi has numerous advantages. Due to its increasing demand the scope of the wifi network is also on the rise.

You can have a better speed of Internet connection by using wifi network. Since the bandwidth provided by wireless cutwork is large connection speed between two nodes is faster. It is also faster to transmit data between two devices connected through wifi. Wifi cuts down the cost of laying down the cable for network connection. With no wires attached it is possible that the sender node can be mobile. The equipments required to fully establishing the wifi network anywhere is relatively cheap. So the cost incurred in establishing the wireless wifi connection is cheaper and also very easy to install. Wifi established in small place do not even need the wireless routers.
