Alzheimer’s And Diabetes Type 2 - Are They Related?
Is Alzheimer’s a form of Diabetes? That is a scary thought, especially with diabetes increasing at an alarming rate. How would Alzheimer’s affect your retirement? Do you have money saved up to take care of it?
In 2005, when it was learned that the pancreas is not the only organ to produce insulin (your brain also produces insulin) - it was thought by some that Alzheimer’s may be a third form of diabetes. Insulin receptors in your brain are essential for learning and memory, and it is a known fact that insulin receptors in the brain are lower in people with Alzheimers.
The good news is that this may be reversible. Drugs used to treat Type 2 diabetes might “supersede currently available Alzheimer’s drugs.”
A drop in insulin production in your brain contributes to the degeneration of your brain cells. Studies have shown that people with lower levels of insulin and insulin receptors in their brain often have Alzheimer’s. A test that measures a toxic protein ADDL in the spinal fluid claims to detect Alzheimer’s in its early stages.
The best treatment for Alzheimers disease continues to be prevention, not drugs.
If there is merit in the above research, it behooves us to prevent Diabetes Type 2 from developing. My father (who was a medical doctor with special education in prevention and nutrition, and who knew that his mother-in-law was a diabetic taking insulin) brought up his children without white sugar and candy. We were chagrined when he was given a box of chocolates as a thank you gift, that we never saw inside that candy box. But I still remember the reason for that. I still avoid sugar and candy, and I am careful not to eat refined carbohydrates. A little deprivation is much easier to live with than years of declining health as a result of Diabetes.
Wake up, America! Most illnesses can be prevented by eating properly, by taking good nutritional supplements on a regular basis, and by emotional health. Please go to the Resource Box below for more suggestions.
